ARDC Leadership Series: Enabling Research Translation:  25-Sep
Translating research outcomes into industry innovation and government decision making poses significant challenges, partly due to the gap between academic innovation and practical application.  Bridging this gap requires fostering strong partnerships, identifying and collaborating on key inputs and translating these research findings to meet practical demands.  Data can play a pivotal role in this process.

This free forum will explore some of the barriers and opportunities for effective translation of research findings into industry innovation, supporting government decision making and delivering societal benefits.

When:  2-4pm AEST, 25 September.
Where:  235 Jones Street, Ultimo, NSW;  and Online.

Venables Award Now Open:  closes 1-Nov
This award is for new developers of open source software for data analytics, and is organised by the Statistical Society of Australia, and sponsored by ARDC.

The aim is to encourage new open source software development from the Australian community with a view to support efforts to develop and share data science and statistics methodology.  It is particularly for software development work from early to mid-career researchers or developers (individuals or teams).  A later career researcher application would be considered, if this was a first software project.

For more information and how to apply (and hear from Bill Venables himself) go to: https://statsocaus.github.io/venables-award/.
Eureka Prize Won by Gordon Smyth
ARDC is pleased to announce that Professor Gordon Smyth of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (WEHI) has won the 2024 Eureka Prize for Excellence in Research Software, which is awarded annually by the Australian Museum, honouring excellence across research and innovation, leadership, science engagement, and school science in Australia.

Currently head of WEHI’s bioinformatics division, Prof Smyth leads the development of the open-source software limma, which helps identify and interpret changes in genomic or proteomic material.  Having contributed to more than 70,000 scientific papers, limma is the world’s most downloaded R software package for statistical bioinformatics.

Securing Voices of Country
The University of Queensland is building a centralised digital archival repository to protect Australia’s invaluable heritage of Indigenous languages.  The project is a collaboration with the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) in the Language Data Commons of Australia (LDaCA).

There are significant collections of materials on Indigenous and regional languages, but they’re all over the country in different libraries, archives, research data repositories – and in some cases, literally in a box under the bed.  This repository marks the first large-scale effort to consolidate these materials at a single source and make them more accessible to the communities reflected in them.

Groundbreaking Data Sharing Project to Better Inform Environmental Assessments
A new project will enable cumulative environmental impact assessments in 2 priority development zones: Pilbara and Cockburn Sound in WA.

The Shared Environmental Analytics Facility (SEAF), which now has pilot programs in Cockburn Sound and the Pilbara, takes data from a broad range of sources to support environmental impact assessments and to create useful products such as maps, reports and forecasting tools.

SEAF was developed by The Western Australian Biodiversity Science Institute (WABSI) and the Western Australian Marine Science Institution (WAMSI), now joined by the ARDC for the next stage of the program.

New Online Tool Simplifies Farm Data Sharing Contracts
A new online Data Sharing Agreement (DSA) Tool empowers farmers and food producers to securely and confidently share their data.  It is now easier for farm businesses and those who collect, manage and share their data to access an industry best-practice contract for data sharing – thanks to this new digital tool.

The Tool is free to use and has been developed in partnership with Food Agility CRC, tier one legal firm Minter Ellison, Federation University and the ARDC.
