Workshop on Accelerator Programming and Directives:  12 to 17-Nov
Hosted by Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre’s Marciej Cytowski, the aim of the 10th WACCPD 2023 workshop is to share methods and case studies that demonstrate programmability, performance, and performance portability across architectures for various distributed HPC, data, and AI workloads.

As part of SC23, this workshop will be part of an unparalleled mix of thousands of scientists, engineers, researchers, educators, programmers, developers, and system administrators who intermingle to learn, share, and grow.  Each year, SC provides the leading technical program for the HPC community, which is designed to share best practices in all areas of HPC.

Winners of Inaugural ARDC Eureka Prize for Research Software
ARDC is delighted to announce the winners of the inaugural ARDC Eureka Prize for Excellence in Research Software, Dr Minh Bui and Professor Robert Lanfear from The Australian National University (ANU).

Dr Bui and Professor Lanfear combined their computer science and biology expertise to develop IQ-TREE2 – free, open-source software that turns DNA data into crucial evolutionary insights by quickly estimating the phylogenetic tree of any group of organisms. Used to investigate everything from the evolution of life on earth to the spread COVID-19 virus, this user-friendly tool has become a staple for life scientists worldwide.

Help Shape a National Persistent Identifier Strategy for Better Research
The ARDC has coordinated a draft national strategy for persistent identifiers (PIDs), a core component of word-class information infrastructure for research and innovation.  Help further develop it by sharing your feedback, submitting a use case, and taking part in our community engagement events.

Secure Data Analytics Platform, ERICA, Brings Better Health Outcomes
To get to the bottom of why women do not recover as well as men after a stroke, health researchers at The George Institute for Global Health in Sydney (https://www.georgeinstitute.org.au/) used the new, secure and powerful cloud-based platform, ERICA.  ERICA stands for E-Research Institutional Cloud Architecture, and enables researchers to analyse huge datasets while adhering to strict ethics guidelines.

The ERICA Platform is a fully scalable and secure online environment, created to enable people to analyse health related and other highly sensitive data.

AARNet Train-The-Trainer Workshops
AARNet is running workshops covering the services it offers, targeted to research support staff in a train-the-trainer style so participants such as librarians, eResearch analysts or faculty research support staff can reuse the open source content to train researchers.

The workshops provide participants with more confidence in giving advice to researchers about the options available to them and are tailored for those with little to no technical knowledge, including hands-on components.

These sessions cover topics on network know-how and data handling, and are open and free to all AARNet member universities, and delivered via Zoom on demand.

QCIF and UQ in iAwards National Final
QCIF and The University of Queensland were a finalist in the Australian Information Industry Association’s national iAwards after placing in the state competition.

QCIF and UQ were a Merit Recipient in the Technology Platform Solution category in the Queensland iAwards in July this year.

The recognition was for KeyPoint, an eResearch platform that revolutionises the way data stewards manage and share sensitive research data for analysis by approved researchers, with strict governance controls at scale.

Although KeyPoint did not win a national iAward, announced on 31 August, the team is incredibly proud to have been a finalist.
