Dear Alex, here is the National eResearch Newsletter.
National eResearch Newsletter - September 2022
Message from AeRO:

We are very excited to announce that the Program for eResearch-Australasia 2022 has now been released – see https://conference.eresearch.edu.au/2022-program/.  We are very grateful to the Program Committee and other Reviewers who have enabled us to be confident in the submissions we have incorporated into the Program.  There was a record number of submissions this year, which has meant that some acceptable sessions had regrettably to be omitted.  Overall, a very high standard has been set.

We also have some wonderful Keynote sessions, a variety of Birds of a Feather sessions, lots of Posters, and a number of Lightning talks.  The Exhibition area will again be buzzing.

EarlyBird (discounted) registration has been put back to 30-Sep, so check out the program, sign up, and wend your way to Brisbane in October.

Alex Reid, eResAU2022 PC Co-Chair & Newsletter Editor (editor@aero.edu.au).

Supercomputing Merit Allocation Schemes:  Closes 3-Oct
Supercomputing Merit Allocation Schemes for 2023 allocation round are now open.

The National Computational Merit Allocation Scheme (NCMAS) is Australia’s premiere grant scheme for access to high-performance computing (HPC) resources.  The new Pawsey’s Preparatory Access Scheme is available for researchers who need to benchmark their codes and workflows before applying to one of the merit allocation schemes.

In 2018 the Australian Government awarded $70 million to upgrade Pawsey’s supercomputing infrastructure.  As part of the Pawsey Technology Refresh project, Pawsey deployed and made available Setonix Phase 1 CPU system in June 2022.  The full scale Setonix Phase 2 system will be made available to researchers for 2023 allocation round.

Australian Space Data Analysis Facility EOI:  Closes 7-Oct
The Australian Space Data Analysis Facility (ASDAF) supports researchers and small to medium enterprises (SMEs) with space data analytics and expertise.  The facility aids in reducing the cost and risks of innovating using space data - allowing for the developing of new products and services to garner local and international opportunities for Australian businesses.

Round four of EOI submissions is currently open and will close on October 7.

Visit  https://asdaf.space/eoi for more information and how to apply.

QCIF Announces its New CEO
Sach Jayasinghe has joined QCIF as its new Chief Executive Officer.  He succeeds Professor John Bancroft who retired as QCIF’s CEO in June this year.

Sach is perhaps best known as the former Director of Research Infrastructure at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), a role he held for about five years before stepping down in August 2021.

ResBazQld Deferred to November 2022
Research Bazaar Queensland was postponed from August to November due to the Covid and flu peak forecast for Brisbane.  ResBazQld has been tentatively rescheduled to 1–3 November.

In the spirit of a marketplace or bazaar, ResBaz is a highly participatory three-day intensive conference where researchers from many different disciplines can learn, share knowledge and skills, and have fun!  In 2022, ResBazQld will be hosted by Griffith University.

New National GPU Service Goes Live
Australian researchers can now access high-end cloud computing power on the ARDC Nectar Research Cloud via the new National Graphics Processing Units (GPU) Service.

GPUs are in high demand by Australian researchers for processing large datasets or images, 3D imaging, machine learning, and computational modelling.

Australian researchers can now reserve GPUs and large memory virtual machines for their research in advance via a user-friendly interface on the ARDC Nectar Research Cloud dashboard.  This will help share high-end compute resources amongst researchers, and provide quicker and more efficient reservation and access to the resources.

For more information, see:  https://ardc.edu.au/news/new-national-gpu-service-goes-live/.
QCIF Announces Two New JCU eResearch Analysts
Dr Erin Graham and Pauline Lawrey have joined QCIF as eResearch Analysts based at James Cook University.  Both Erin and Pauline will assist in the promotion and support of QCIF services to JCU researchers, including research computing and digital skills training.  Both are based at JCU’s eResearch Centre in Townsville.  Erin plans to visit JCU’s Cairns campus at least once a month to work in person with researchers there.
