Message from AeRO:
 
The “Big Event” will shortly be upon us, the 2024 eResearch-Australasia Conference, which brings together across Australia and New Zealand all those involved in eResearch (as researchers or developers or support staff).  Over 400 have already registered, and it is not too late to do so - we look forward to meeting up with you all in 2 weeks’ time!  The Program is full of important and stimulating sessions, including exciting keynotes, and provides wonderful opportunities to network, learn, contribute and enjoy the community and the event.  Check out the program at https://conference.eresearch.edu.au/program/.
 
The AeRO AGM will be held at the eResearch Conference, at lunchtime on Wednesday, 30-Oct-24, from 12:25pm, in the Grand Ballroom.  All members are urged to attend, and anyone else who may be interested in the purpose and functioning of AeRO is welcome to come along.

Cyber Security BoF at eResearch-Australasia:  29-Oct
AARNet and ARDC are hosting a Birds of a Feather session at the eResearch Australasia 2024 Conference to help identify and discuss the growing cyber security challenges within the Digital Research Infrastructure (DRI) that underpins the research sector.

NCMAS Open for Applications:  closes 31-Oct
The National Computational Merit Allocation Scheme (NCMAS) 2025 is now open for applications, which must be received by 31-Oct.  NCMAS is Australia’s leading grant scheme providing access to high-performance computing (HPC) resources at the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI) and Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre.  Together, these Tier-1 HPC facilities offer hundreds of millions of computing hours to meritorious researchers.

Venables Award for Open Source Software:  closes 1-Nov
This award is for new developers of open source software for data analytics, and is organised by the Statistical Society of Australia, and sponsored by ARDC.
 
The aim is to encourage new open source software development from the Australian community with a view to support efforts to develop and share data science and statistics methodology.  It is particularly for software development work from early to mid-career researchers or developers (individuals or teams).  A later career researcher application would be considered, if this was a first software project.

Generative AI Code Fest Australia:  Closes 5-Nov
NCI, in collaboration with NVIDIA and OpenACC, is excited to host Generative AI CodeFest Australia from 8-Nov to 6-Dec.  Supported by the Australian Government’s National AI Centre, this event offers AI engineers, developers, and programmers a chance to develop, optimize, and deploy AI applications using NVIDIA NIM.  Don’t miss this opportunity to enhance your AI skills!

Bringing Together Communities in Digital Skills Training:  10-Feb
Each year, members of The Carpentries assemble at Carpentry Connect events to exchange ideas, network, and collaborate on topics related to training researchers in foundational coding and data science skills.  Next year, New Zealand eScience Infrastructure (NeSI) is hosting NZ Carpentry Connect 2025 as a FREE pre-conference event to eResearch NZ / eRangahau Aotearoa 2025.  Carpentry Connect events are friendly, fun, and a safe space for exploring what is happening in your local Carpentries community.

Better Data to Analyse and Protect Queensland’s Biodiversity
As a recipient of an Advance Queensland Industry Research Foundations grant, QCIF will create an innovative ecological data service that simplifies data management, species distribution modelling, and statistical analysis for the Queensland’s State of Environment Report.

Green Hydrogen Research Breakthrough
Associate Professor Ravichandar Babarao from RMIT University, along with fellow researchers, has developed a ground-breaking material that can significantly enhance green hydrogen production directly from seawater.  This breakthrough addresses a major challenge in sustainable energy.  Babarao is also an Associate Investigator at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Green Electrochemical Conversion of CO2 (GETCO2).

Reflections from Another Successful NZ Research Software Engineering Conference
A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for the 2024 New Zealand Research Software Engineering Conference (NZRSE 2024)!  The two-day event was filled with insightful discussions, cutting-edge research, and lively networking that brought our community closer together.  From AI safety to fostering impactful collaborations, this year’s conference focused on the theme “Empowering Communities Through Research Software: From Innovation to Impact”.

Driving Innovation with Research Link Australia
The ARDC’s Research Link Australia (RLA) platform provides access to searchable data on Australian research activities and stakeholders.  RLA facilitates the translation of research into real-world products and helps industry connect with research collaborators to boost R&D capabilities.

Partnering to Build National Capability Across Aotearoa’s Genomics Research Community
Over the last six years, New Zealand eScience Infrastructure and Genomics Aotearoa have partnered to build and diversify digital skill capabilities for genomics researchers across Aotearoa New Zealand.
 
Co-delivering a Metagenomics Summer School with researchers at Waipapa Taumata Rau University of Auckland has been one of the successful annual events under that initiative.  This year, the Summer School hosted 20 early-career and mid-career researchers for four days of hands-on sessions related to metagenomics data management and analysis for genomics research.

Shaping Research Software: An Interview with Dr Saras Windecker
The ARDC spoke with Dr Saras Windecker, Senior Research Officer at The Telethon Kids Institute, who is actively involved in the open research community and in promoting reproducible research practices.  Saras uses her expertise in statistical modelling and software for applied research in public health and ecology.

Supporting Aotearoa’s Dynamic Realm of Indigenous Data Science
In August 2024, the second annual Indigidata Aotearoa Wānanga brought together 15 Māori scholars from diverse backgrounds for four days of robust discussions and knowledge-sharing with some of Aotearoa New Zealand’s leading researchers in data science and data sovereignty.
 
The aim of Indigidata Aotearoa is to build capacity amongst Māori in:  Māori data science, Māori data sovereignty, Māori data ethics, and Māori data applications.  It is hosted by Te Kotahi Research Institute (TKRI) in partnership with NeSI, Victoria University of Wellington, Time-evolving Data Science and Artificial Intelligence for Advanced Open Environmental Science (TAIAO), Genomics Aotearoa and the Tikanga in Technology research program.
