AI Skill Training Pathway: Bridging Gaps and Fostering Inclusivity:  17-Oct
NCI has become a key source for AI research, especially in fields like Astronomy, Bioinformatics, and Earth Sciences.  In this session (Tuesday, 16:05), NCI representatives are going to discuss a strategy to support researchers reliant on computationally intensive AI models, addressing the growing use of AI models in various disciplines.  The dialogue is aimed at bringing together academics, industry professionals, and HDR students to exchange ideas with an emphasis on making AI training more accessible and inclusive, focusing on diverse perspectives in the AI field.

NCI National AI Flagship Scheme Closing Soon:  22-Oct
Applications are now open for the NCI National AI Flagship Scheme.  Researchers and innovators are encouraged to apply, as this scheme aims to foster cutting-edge AI projects that could shape the future of technology and science.  Grants of computing time at NCI are available through to June 2024.

TechTalk 23:  Galaxy Total Perspective Vortex:  26-Oct
Topic:  Galaxy - Linking User Needs to Distributed Computing Through the Total Perspective Vortex:  the Total Perspective Vortex (TPV) is a Galaxy plugin which provides a domain-agnostic design that is adaptable to other complex resource management systems and ensures the job is appropriately resourced.

AARNet and Globus Technical Catch-ups:  26-Oct
AARNet is running Globus technical sessions to help researchers find out more about Globus and to discuss technical problems they are trying to solve or issues they would like to address relating to their Globus service or data movement more generally.
 
In this session, we’re joined by the key Globus team to discuss institutional approaches towards researcher adoption and uptake for transferring data with Globus.
 
This session will be held on 26 October 2023 at 10:30 am AEDT.

CloudStor Decommission Clinics:  next on 30-Oct
AARNet is hosting monthly clinics to help CloudStor users with issues they may be having downloading or migrating data from their CloudStor drives ahead of the CloudStor decommission on 15 December 2023.
 
Staff from the AARNet eResearch, CloudStor and Support teams will be present to answer your questions and provide information.
 
CloudStor Clinics are open to everyone – CloudStor users, IT staff, research support staff and institution/tenant admins, and anyone else who is interested.
 
These clinics will be run monthly, with the next session to be held on 30 October 2023 at 1 pm AEDT.

eResearch NZ 2024 Call for Submissions:  Closes 31-Oct
The fast pace of technological change is opening up new avenues for research and ecosystem changes across our sector.  With that in mind, eResearch NZ 2024's strategic theme is He Moana Pukepuke e Ekengia e te Waka / Navigating an Evolving eResearch Landscape.  Join the conversation by submitting lightning talks, presentations, birds-of-a-feather, or demo sessions that showcase insights or spark discussion. We're also hosting a special lightning talk session for Early Career Researchers to tell us about their amazing research.  Deadline to submit is 31 October 2023.

ROR and ORCID – Asserting Affiliations & Professional Activities to ORCID Records: 7-Nov
This webinar will cover the basics of ROR as an organization identifier and how it can be used as part of the ORCID API to assert Affiliations and Professional Activities to ORCID records.
 
We will also have the opportunity to have two case studies of organizations using ROR with the ORCID API.
 
In the end, we will have plenty of time for questions. Participants are also encourage to submit their questions in advance when registering.
 
There will be 2 sessions to cater for different time-zones worldwide.

Making Meaning 2024:  Call for Speakers:  closes 20-Nov
Do you have a great project that you’d like to share at Making Meaning 2024?  Lightning talk applications are now open.
 
Hosted at State Library of Queensland in Brisbane and online, Making Meaning is a day for digital innovators, creatives and researchers working with collections as data.
 
We’re looking for 8-minute presentations that showcase best practice, tools, workflows, experimentation, or ethics when working with collections as data.
 
We are especially interested in projects driven by meaning making, storytelling and interaction.

Exploring Opportunities & Challenges of Responsible Research in a Shifting World
Another New Zealand Research Software Engineering (NZ RSE) Conference has come to a close, gathering a diverse community to share learnings, challenges and aspirations around writing code and developing applications that enable research.  Recordings are now available on YouTube and a recap sharing highlights of the event has been shared by New Zealand eScience Infrastructure (NeSI).

Marking 25 Years Building Capacity in Essential Data and Computational Skills
Australasia’s involvement with The Carpentries has early roots and has evolved and expanded in many ways since then.  As part of the Carpentries’ 25th Anniversary celebrations, Carpentries community members in New Zealand and Australia showcased the growth, contributions and impact of The Carpentries in our region.

Empowering Librarians with Carpentries Instructor Skills
On 22-25 August 2023, AARNet’s Training and Engagement Lead, Dr Sara King, alongside Pawsey Education & Training Manager, Ann Backhaus, hosted a Carpentries Instructor Training online workshop.
 
The workshop was held online over several days, with participants from universities in Queensland, Western Australia and the USA.  Through hands-on instruction, participants were empowered to learn the basics of educational psychology, evidence-based classroom practices, how to apply both to teaching workshops for The Carpentries and build their confidence so that they can teach researchers to work with data and code.

Aotearoa New Zealand’s First Macro View of Research Data
As a nascent community, Aotearoa New Zealand is preparing its first Macro View estimate of research data volume on a national scale.  Preliminary results were recently shared with contributing institutions, and will be shared more widely at eResearch Australasia (16-20 October 2023) and International Data Week 2023 (23-26 October 2023) alongside Australian colleagues.

Dr Claire Rye Named Co-Chair of World Data System Early Career Researchers Network
The World Data System’s International Program Office (WDS-IPO) has appointed Dr Claire Rye, NeSI's Product Manager - Data Services, as the new Co-Chair for the World Data System Early Career Researchers Network (WDS-ECR Network).  The WDS-ECR Network organizes various activities such as webinars, workshops, mentoring programs, and social events to foster a sense of community and belonging among its members.
