Dear <<First Name>>, here is the Australasian eResearch Newsletter.
Australasian eResearch Newsletter - November 2025
Message from AeRO:

I hope you are all well recovered by now from the very successful eResearch Australasia Conference held in Brisbane 4 weeks ago (goodness!  Is it that long ago!?).  It’s always full-on, but very much more so for those brave souls who attended IDW in the week before.

Here are some basic statistics about the event (more in the Reflections issue):  total registrations: 574;  Workshop registrations: 114;  WHPC & SysAdmin registrations: 69.  Countries represented: 15 (incl Aus & NZ).

Please complete the post-conference Survey at https://cdesign.eventsair.com/2025eresearch/delegate-survey/Survey/Register.

Next Year’s Conference will run from 26 to 30 October 2026, at the MCC!!!

A reminder that we would really like to hear of your reflections on the conference.  Because of some email issues we have had, I’m putting back the deadline for contributions to this Friday, 21-Nov.  (Also, my apologies that this issue is a little late going out).

Alex Reid, Newsletter Editor.

AeRO AGM Highlights
The AeRO AGM was held during the eResearch Conference.  There are now 20 members, which is 7 more than last year.  Only one Forum was held during the year, and it is thought another should be held once the National Roadmap is released.  Recognising that next year will be the 20th eResearch Conference, some thought is being given to the possibility of reshaping the Conference, or AeRO, reflecting changes in the community.

A new Committee was elected, actually unchanged from last year, with Luc Betbeder-Matibet (UNSW) as President, Aditi Subramanya (Pawsey) as Vice-President, Gareth Williams (CSIRO) as Secretary/Treasurer, and Ryan Fraser (AARNet) and Jake Carroll (UQ) as ordinary members.

Further information about AeRO can be found on the newly refurbished website - https://www.aero.edu.au/.
Alex Reid Receives Inaugural AeRO Award
Alex Reid was recognised at the Conference for his many contributions to AeRO.  He has served on the Program Committee for many years, and has co-chaired it twice;  he has also edited the monthly newsletter for the last 10 years.  He was awarded the inaugural AeRO Committee Prize 2025 “for significant contributions to our community and conferences.”
Breakthrough Quantum-Secure Link Protects Data Using the Laws of Physics
Australian technology has delivered a live quantum-secure link, a breakthrough that promises to future-proof critical data against tomorrow’s cyber threats.  The project brings together QuintessenceLabs, Australia’s national science agency CSIRO, and AARNet, the national research and education network.

By combining local expertise in quantum cyber security, digital science and advanced fibre infrastructure, the partners have successfully demonstrated a quantum key distribution (QKD) system to generate unbreakable encryption keys over standard optical fibre.  Together, these organisations are building sovereign quantum capability to protect Australia’s most valuable data.

Altmetric Top 25 NTRO Repositories for 2024
Compiled by Simon Porter (VP of Research Futures, Digital Science), this list shines a spotlight on the essential yet often overlooked non-traditional research outputs (NTROs) and the repositories that host them.

See the interactive Top 25 list here: https://www.altmetric.com/blog/beyond-the-journal-inside-the-altmetric-top-25-ntro-repositories/.

While journal articles remain central to scholarly communication, the landscape is shifting. Repositories are no longer just archives – they’re amplifiers, making NTROs open, persistent, and discoverable.

A Monash University repository "Young people's perspectives on missing out on being young" came in at #3.
Are Compliance Requirements Slowing Down Defence Research?
For researchers collaborating with Defence or other regulated partners, compliance is now non-negotiable, with Essential 8 Maturity Level 2 now mandatory.  But maintaining compliance shouldn’t sacrifice research velocity or team collaboration.

The challenge lies in building secure, compliant research environments that meet Defence standards while enabling teams to innovate seamlessly.

CAUDIT Cloud provides a streamlined pathway to innovation, helping researchers protect sensitive data, meet Essential 8 controls, and maintain frictionless collaboration.  See how leading researchers are turning compliance into a catalyst for collaboration in our latest article:  https://bit.ly/3LCbQ3Z.
