Dear Alex, here is the Australasian eResearch Newsletter.
Australasian eResearch Newsletter - March 2024
Message from AeRO:

The AeRO forum at the SuperComputing Asia meeting on 21st Feb was a huge success. Attracting some 70 people, both from Australia and internationally, the forum road tested a draft proposal for a Research Data Reference Architecture. This draft document was developed during 2023 by a group of colleagues from multiple organisations, including universities, CSIRO, ATSE and the ARDC.  A report on the Forum is one of the articles in the body of this Newsletter.

We would also like to remind you that planning for the eResearch-Australasia Conference 2024 has begun.  This will take place at the Pullman Melbourne Hotel, Albert Park, Victoria, from 28 October to 1 November 2024.  Natasha Simons and Luc Betbeder-Matibet have been appointed General Chairs, and a Program Committee will be announced shortly.

David Abramson, AeRO Chair.

TechTalk26:  Extracting Metadata from Diverse Data Sources:  24-Apr
This talk will outline software architecture and techniques that alleviate the burden of metadata collation and curation.  It is designed to homogenise metadata harvested from a variety of common metadata catalogue applications.  For metadata-poor sources, textual analysis and machine learning models are utilised.  The limitations and viability of such techniques are discussed.  At the end of the transformation process, ISO-compliant metadata records are created which are suitable for importing into a geonetwork geospatial catalogue.

Online at 2pm AEDT, 24-Apr-24
Speaker:  Vincent Fazio, software developer at CSIRO Mineral Resources.

AeRO Forum on Research Data Reference Architecture
A draft document developed during 2023 was presented to the group by AeRO President, David Abramson.  Working groups then discussed the details.

The groups were initially asked to consider whether the reference architecture had the right attributes, and to decide if any attributes were missing.  A second session discussed different implementation choices, and drew not only on the expertise in the research and university sector, but also from industry colleagues.  AeRO and partners are now preparing a modified document based on the feedback, and this will be taken forward as a national proposal during 2024.
