Dear Alex, here is the Australasian eResearch Newsletter.
Australasian eResearch Newsletter - June 2024
Message from AeRO:

As eResearch-Australasia Co-Chair, I am writing to provide you with an update on our program for this year and encourage you and members of your organisation to join us in Melbourne at the Pullman from 28 October to 1 November.

As our call for papers comes to a close, we are pleased to let you know that we have had a great response with over 185 submissions for our program committee to review and schedule.  With more poster submissions still to come this may be our largest number of submissions ever.  Last year we had 484 registrants, bouncing back to our pre-Covid numbers.  This gives me great confidence that we will have lots of great content for our community with a good mix of workshops, BOF sessions, oral presentations, lightning talks and posters.

Most importantly, for me, will be the hallway conversations as we share what we are working on with each other.  Invaluable opportunities for networking, building our eResearch community and developing the thought-leaders of our workforce.  I look forward to catching up with many of you there.

Luc Betbeder-Matibet, eResearch Australasia co-Chair and on behalf of AeRO Exec.

TechTalk 27: Service Mesh Overview and Anatomy:  20-Jun
This presentation explains how a Kubernetes cluster can use a service mesh to abstract the network away, resolving many of the challenges arising from talking to remote endpoints within a Kubernetes cluster.  A service mesh is a tool that inserts security, observability, and reliability features to applications at the platform layer instead of the application layer.  It controls the delivery of service requests to other services, performs load balancing, encrypts data, and discovers other services.  Service mesh is not a network service for establishing connectivity between the microservices, instead, it has policies and controls that are applied on top of an existing network to govern how microservices interact.

Who:  Ping Chen, ARDC Nectar core team senior DevOps engineer.
When:  13:00-14:00, AEST, Thursday, 20-Jun-24.
Where:  online via Zoom.

ARCOS Symposium 2024:  27-Jun
The Australian Research Container Orchestration Service (ARCOS) is a community driven by national institutions that aims to establish capabilities in building reproducible and scalable digital research outputs using containers and Kubernetes.

Join the ARCOS Symposium to share use cases and expertise and advance new capabilities.  Talks will cover:
  • Kubernetes cluster lifecycle management using the ClusterAPI;
  • research project talks on Kubernetes implementation;
  • containers use cases on HPC infrastructure;
  • industry or CNCF.

ARDC Annual Survey 2024 Now Open:  by 28-Jun
Do you use ARDC services and resources?  Do you work with the ARDC?  Take the anonymous 5 min survey now.  The survey closes COB Friday 28 June 2024.

The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) invites the Australian research community to take a short survey about your interaction with the ARDC and use of our national research infrastructure and services.

We will use the information you provide to improve the services we deliver and report on user satisfaction to the Australian Government’s National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) program.

Please take a few minutes to provide your input at:  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2024ARDCAnnualSurvey.
