Dear Alex, here is the Australasian eResearch Newsletter.
Australasian eResearch Newsletter - February 2025
Message from AeRO:

Once again, a quiet month for eResearch events, but I sense that activity is ramping up (which suits me fine, as I am still recovering from jetlag and over-exposure to Antarctic icebergs!).

Remember that AeRO is looking for ideas for it to serve the community more effectively.  For instance, it has been exploring the possibility of running an online-only 1 day or 1.5 day conference with one or two keynotes and a curated selection of the 2024 eResearch presentations including opportunity for a set of BOF summaries as lightning talks.  Please let Luc Betbeder-Matibet (AeRO President) know what you think - Luc@unsw.edu.au.

Alex Reid, Newsletter Editor.

Disease Data Challenges Co-Design Workshops: from 18-Feb
As part of its Translational Research Data Challenges initiative, the ARDC is starting Disease Data Challenges - mission-driven projects that address research data challenges in 2 initial focus areas, cancer and infectious diseases. Join our co-design workshops to share your data challenges and be part of developing the solutions.

Where: Online
When: 18 February to 6 March 2025

ARDC Community Data Lab for HASS and Indigenous Research:  18-Feb
The ARDC Community Data Lab (CDL), initiated by the ARDC HASS and Indigenous Research Data Commons, offers diverse tools, datasets, analysis environments, and collaboration options for humanities, arts, social sciences and Indigenous researchers in Australia.  It not only provides instruments and infrastructure but also establishes governance and protocols for robust research management.

Join the ARDC at a webinar to kick-start the co-design of the ARDC Community Data Lab to support data-driven humanities, arts, social sciences and Indigenous research.

When:  18 February 2025, 12noon to 1pm AEDT.
Where:  online.

TechTalk28: ElasticSearch @ TERN:  20-Feb
This presentation talks about our Journey of driving data discovery and delivery at TERN using Elasticsearch.  Our usage of Elasticsearch evolved over a number of years, and we'd like to share our experiences with managing, scaling, and effective use of indices and document schemata.  Setting up an Elasticsearch cluster and structuring your indices and documents can be quite a daunting task, with many little things to consider.

Speakers:
Gerhard Weis, tech lead at TERN, and Javier Sanchez-Gonzales, Senior Software Engineer at TERN.

When:  Thu, 20 Feb 2025 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM AEDT

Addressing DNA Sequencing Data Submission Challenges at Global Scale
Data submission to international repositories is an essential task for many life science researchers, but it can often be challenging.  New Australian BioCommons training events will focus on streamlining data submission processes for various data types, addressing common challenges, and providing best-practice guidance to interacting with the European Nucleotide Archive (ENA).  This is a unique opportunity to learn directly from the ENA team.

Online 'roundtable' community discussions focussing on different themes:  Genomics, MAGs (Metagenome Assembled Genomes) and eDNA (environmental DNA). 1-3 Apr, 10:00-12:00 AEDT.

Practical online training workshops to explore data submission and retrieval.
25 Mar - 03 Apr, 13:00-16:00 AEDT
