Australasian eResearch Newsletter - February 2024
Message from AeRO:

We are pleased to advise that planning for the eResearch-Australasia Conference 2024 has begun.  This will take place at the Pullman Melbourne Hotel, Albert Park, Victoria, from 28 October to 1 November 2024.  Natasha Simons and Luc Betbeder-Matibet have been appointed General Chairs, and we are working on constituting a Program Committee.

Planning for the next AeRO Forum is well advanced now.  This will be held on the afternoon of 21 February, as part of the SupercomputingAsia 2024 Conference to be held in Sydney (see 2 articles about these events below).  There will be some 20-30 people in attendance at the Forum, working on the Research Data Reference Architecture.  It is not too late to register and come along – please let David Abramson know if you want to attend (david.abramson@uq.edu.au).

David Abramson, AeRO Chair.

AeRO Forum @ SC Asia 2024: Road Testing RDRA:  21-Feb
AeRO is working to improve our understanding of the underlying principles of the variety of research data management infrastructure systems that have been designed and built.  We have developed a draft high-level Research Data Reference Architecture (RDRA).  This RDRA is intended to guide the design, construction, and procurement of implementations without mandating any approach, technical solution, or product choice.

In this Forum, we invite attendees to test this draft by measuring real world research data implementations against the RDRA.

The Forum will be held on 21st Feb after lunch.  Full SC Asia registration or day registration is required to attend.  See https://sca24.sc-asia.org/program/.
Tech Talk 25 - Clean Air Research Data and Analysis Technology (CARDAT):  22-Feb
The CARDAT platform has been developed for sharing both 1) data (ie health records and environmental exposures) and 2) analyses (ie code and models).  This seminar will describe the design and implementation of the range of solutions we used to address the issues posed, applying the FAIR criteria to share health and environmental data/analysis, all while safeguarding confidentiality.

It will be given by Dr Ivan Hanigan, Director, WHO Collaborating Centre for Climate Change and Health Impact Assessment.

When: 22 Feb 2024, 2.00pm AEDT

Researcher Survey: Access to Public Sector Data:  closes 28-Feb
The ARDC is running a survey to measure researcher access to Australian public sector data so we can assess the gap between demand and supply.

All researchers, research managers or those supporting researchers who have requested access to Australian public sector data in the past 2 years are invited to complete this survey.

The survey is anonymous, and will take around 10-15 minutes to complete. It closes on 28 February 2024.

Learn more and take the survey at:  https://ardc.edu.au/article/researcher-survey-access-to-public-sector-data/.
Data and Platforms to Meet Australia’s Future Research Needs:  29-Feb
Join us for a showcase of valuable data assets and platforms for researchers delivered through the ARDC’s National Data Assets and Platforms programs.

When:  29 February 2024, 2 to 4pm AEDT
Where:  Online and at the Shine Dome, Canberra on Ngunnawal Country
Run by:  ARDC

 Speakers:
 -  Ryan Winn, CEO, Australian Council of Learned Academies (ACOLA)
 -  Rosie Hicks, CEO, ARDC
 -  Professor Louisa Jorm, Director, Centre for Big Data Research in Health, UNSW

ARDC Digital Research Skills Summit 2024:  21-May
As the research landscape undergoes rapid digital transformation, upskilling researchers for digital research becomes an imperative for achieving cutting edge discoveries.

Explore digital research skills challenges and opportunities with thought leaders on the first day at the Skills Leadership Forum.  On Day 2, hear from researchers and learn how they navigate their skills needs and gaps.  Then participate in regional conversations with digital research skills trainer communities at Carpentry Connect on Day 3.

Join us for all 3 days (21-23 May) in Melbourne/Naarm, or register for the days which interest you the most.

Enhancing Environmental Decision Making with Trusted Data
A new strategic partnership will provide leadership in achieving better public good outcomes for Australia’s environment, with letters of intent now signed by the four partners.

A trusted environment data and information supply chain to improve research and decision making on Australia’s environment is the focus of this strategic partnership between the Australian Government Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW), the Western Australian Biodiversity Science Institute (WABSI), the Western Australian Marine Science Institution (WAMSI), and the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC).

Data Sharing Platform to Transform Ag Industry
The Agricultural Research Federation (AgReFed) is an Australian platform that aims to improve the discoverability of trusted, reusable, and analysis-ready agri-data from across Australia.

Everyone from landholders to researchers and industry professionals can use the open source platform to perform repeatable analyses, as well as draw on new and existing data to produce novel insights across multiple agricultural sectors.

The project, led by Federation University Australia and supported by the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC), has united several universities and industry partners under a shared goal: to make agricultural data more findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR).

Versatile Modelling Tool to Help Tackle Grand Challenges for Earth
The ARDC-supported G-ADOPT platform was originally developed to improve and speed up modelling in geodynamics, the study of the flow of matter in Earth’s interior and its impact at the surface.  Now it’s branching out into other areas of geoscience, set to also help answer other big questions facing our planet – including sea level rise under climate change and renewable energy.

G-ADOPT was developed by an international team led by the Australian National University (ANU)’s Research School of Earth Sciences (RSES) and supported by the ARDC.

Biosecurity Commons Moves to New Home
Biosecurity Commons moved to a new home at the start of 2024 following discussions among its partners and supporters.

The management of the platform and the team transferred from Griffith University to the Centre of Excellence for Biosecurity Risk Analysis (CEBRA) at the University of Melbourne on 1 January 2024.

CEBRA has been the lead on the project since its inception, which makes this change a natural development, and the move provides an exciting opportunity to leverage CEBRA’s world-leading biosecurity expertise.

There will be no change to services for users and the platform will continue to grow and develop new features.
