Message from AeRO:

AeRO has always played a pivotal collaborative role within the eResearch sector. This year, we’re seeking to extend our engagement with a broader audience via the eResearch conference, AeRO Forum and other activities. Last year we ran the first AeRO grants program in collaboration with a commercial partner, and discussions are underway to offer a similar program in 2022.

To kick-off the New Year, we’re rebooting the AeRO Jobs Board, and extend an open invitation to share upcoming opportunities via this platform.

To help make membership more accessible, we’re also reviewing our membership model and hope to share more details with you soon.

In the meantime, if you’re interested in collaborating with AeRO on activities, events or work programs, feel free to contact me directly, at loretta@aero.edu.au.

TechTalk: Open Source Library Vignettes: 22-Feb

It is a truism that Open Source software libraries come in many different flavours. In our AuScope projects we have accumulated a diverse collection of open source software library projects and we would like to share with you our experiences in creating and managing them. We will cover topics such as maintenance issues, suitability of software platforms, code separation and managing different kinds of user groups.

Improve Visibility of Research Software for Career Advancement: 24-Feb

This Panel Discussion is co-hosted by Australian BioCommons, ABACBS, and the ARDC Software Program. It forms part of the implementation of the ARDC National Research Software Agenda (https://bit.ly/rs-agenda) to make research software more visible, better cited and maintained.

Speakers will bring examples from Bioinformatics, but the topic of discussion is of importance for any researcher who produces code.

CloudStor Clinic: 25-Feb

AARNet has introduced fortnightly CloudStor Clinics, running from 25-Feb to 8-Apr, to help researchers and CloudStor users get the most out of CloudStor. The sessions cater for absolute beginners through to advanced users from all areas of research. Participants can drop in any time to discuss problems they are trying to solve or issues they would like to address relating to CloudStor. AARNet staff from the eResearch, CloudStor and Service Desk teams will be available to share knowledge and help users.

The first Clinic will be held at 1pm AEDT, Friday 25-Feb-22.

Research Data Alliance 19th Plenary - Call for Sessions: by 26-Feb

RDA Plenary 19 is currently planned to take place as a hybrid event, as part of International Data Week 2022, taking place 20-23 June 2022.

Webinar: Making Research Code Visible: 2-Mar

In this webinar organised by ARDC, we will cover the four recommendations to make research code more visible. We will also discuss the alignment of these recommendations with the FAIR Principles for research software (FAIR4RS).

Call for Contributions iPres 2022: due 8-Mar

iPres is the premier conference series on digital preservation. The conference brings together information scientists, students, researchers, archivists, librarians, service providers, software developers and experts from different sectors to share emerging and cutting-edge insights in digital preservation. Hosted in Scotland in September 2022, it will be delivered in a hybrid format. Submissions invited for papers, workshops, posters, panels, hack-a-thons, and a Digital Preservation Bake-Off Challenge.

Submissions should relate to the conference theme Data for All, for Good, for Ever: Let Digits Flourish. Deadline: 8 March 2022.

Webinar: Flexible HPC and Cloud for Bioinformatics: 9-Mar

In response to the growing demand for flexible access to high-performance computing and cloud, the National Compute Infrastructure (NCI) has launched a new access scheme: Adapter (see item below).

This webinar introduces life scientists to the Adapter Scheme and provides insights into preparing a strong application, including optimising your bioinformatics pipelines for improved speed and efficiency.

Learn how to analyse your data and use sophisticated computational workflows without the need for programming experience. Launching the Visible Research Software Interest Group

The Visible Research Software Interest Group is a space for community conversation via an online forum for people within Australasian Research Institutions to discuss the visibility of research software, eg citation, publication, and FAIRification. The SIG acts as a catalyst to jump-start coordinated activities designed to improve the visibility of research software assets to recognise authors of research software and improve the sustainability of those assets.

The group will discuss making research software citable, published and FAIR.

NCRIS: The Power Behind Australia’s Science

Behind the national and international headlines of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Australian 2019 bushfires, there is a network of research enablers supporting high-impact, nationally significant research. This network of facilities make up the NCRIS facilities – funded through the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy – and since 2004 they have enabled a wealth of research excellence, making it both headline-worthy and a critical pillar of the Australian economy.

NCI’s New Flexible Adapter Scheme

In response to demand for a scheme that allows for flexible access to high-performance computing and cloud, NCI is launching a new merit-based access scheme. The new Adapter Scheme will facilitate access to data, enable high-throughput computing, and support other new and emerging ways of engaging with Tier-1 high-performance computing and high-performance data resources. Quarterly allocations of up to 500 KSU to be used across NCI’s HPC, cloud and data environments will be available through this scheme.

How Much Are Persistent Identifiers Worth to Australian Research?

For the first time in Australia, an assessment of the value of persistent identifiers to research is underway. A cost-benefit analysis of the impact of persistent identifiers on Australian research is being conducted by MoreBrains Cooperative, supported by the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and Australian Access Federation (AAF). A report on the analysis is expected in mid-2022.

Nebula: New Web-Based Remote Visualisation Windows Cluster is Now Available

Pawsey are delighted to announce our new Windows-based visualisation cluster which will make it easier for researchers to access and build visualisations. Nebula is available via the web, which means researchers can access this resource on the fly without needing to install any client software on their laptops. It will also support touch-enabled interfaces, improving functionality and interactivity.

Diversity and Inclusivity in HPC Mentoring

Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre is striving towards a more diverse, inclusive (D&I) and equitable workplace. To achieve this goal Pawsey are trialling new approaches, including mentoring, participation in D&I Communities of Practice (CoPs), use of inclusive language and using its standing to promote these values to the wider high-performance computing (HPC) community.

2022 Interns: A Demonstration of Immense Talent in Supercomputing

The 2022 Pawsey Intern Showcase has marked the completion of another successful Summer Internship Program and demonstrated again the immense talent and potential emerging in the field of supercomputing. The virtual conference celebrated the work and achievements of this year’s cohort following the completion of a ten-week internship program.

Pawsey’s annual internship program, open to 3rd year through to Masters’ students, is designed to develop skills through immersion in computational science and research projects.
