AI and Machine Learning Approaches in Training:  20-Aug
This month’s ARDC National Skills Forum explores how machine learning and generative AI are causing a rethink about content, formats and methods.

Speakers will cover training in ML and AI, including:
  • how workshops are tailored to different researcher audiences
  • what learners are asking for, and what they take away
  • whether hands-on coaching or mentoring sessions play a role
  • how specific groups are being reached to support diversity and inclusion
  • what evaluation reveals about training quality and impact
Join us for a practical discussion on adapting research training to fast-moving technologies.
Noon to 1pm AEST, Wednesday, 20-Aug-25, online.

QCIF Joins RDA to Advance Open Science and Global Data Sharing
QCIF is now a proud member of the Research Data Alliance (RDA), an international community working together to remove barriers to data sharing across technologies, disciplines, and borders.

As QCIF continues to expand its reach beyond Queensland, this step reflects their commitment to open data, global collaboration, and the advancement of research infrastructure.

Game-Changing Biosecurity Tool for Australia’s Agricultural Protection
QCIF announces a new open-source workflow developed in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, QUT and co-funded by Australian BioCommons, that significantly streamlines the identification of potential biosecurity threats in imported goods.  DAFF currently spends significant time identifying organisms to species level - a critical but labour-intensive task.

QCIF worked with DAFF to document these procedures and translate them into a reproducible, scalable Nextflow pipeline.  The resulting tool, Taxodactyl, should save hundreds of hours each month while enhancing Australia’s frontline biosecurity.  It produces an interactive visual report, clearly presenting evidence-based results and highlighting any analysis limitations.

AARNet Infrastructure Supports Global Galaxy Training and Collaboration
Marking its 20th anniversary, the Galaxy platform remains a vital global resource for accessible, reproducible life sciences research – powering discovery!

Galaxy Australia, a key international node delivered by Australian BioCommons, is hosted on AARNet’s high-performance infrastructure, providing the reliability, scalability, and bandwidth to support thousands of researchers and students worldwide.

Recently, Galaxy Australia was integrated into the Singapore Biology League, where more than 2,000 students ran thousands of analysis tools over four hours, and the Galaxy Training Academy, which attracted over 3,500 participants worldwide to complete bioinformatics training.

Australian Research Council Publishes its PID Action Plan
The ARC has just released its PID Action Plan, which has 5 goals:
  1. ARC grants have a Digital Object Identifier
  2. All Administering Organisations applying for an ARC grant have a Research Organisation Registry identifier
  3. All named personnel have an ORCID and supply it during the establishment phase of ARC awarded grants
  4. ARC’s Research Management System ORCID integration ‘writes’ back to ORCID
  5. ARC has a FAIR Data Policy.
