Dear Alex, here is the Australasian eResearch Newsletter.
Australasian eResearch Newsletter - April 2025
Message from AeRO:

This year’s eResearch Conference 2025 is being held in Brisbane, 20-24 October in the week following IDW2025 (13-16 October).  Both conferences are shaping up to be highlights of eResearch activity in 2025.  Ideally, you should attend both, as they each provide different, unique opportunities.  I know budgets are stretched, but we get few opportunities at the end of the world, as we are, to engage with a range of international speakers and delegates, and both conferences could be invaluable in our efforts to support research in Australasia.

Why not persuade your masters to fund you to attend IDW (see Luc Betbeder-Matibet’s impassioned plea), then take 2-3 days of leave in Brisbane, and then attend eRA2025 without doubling up on air travel costs?

A reminder that Poster abstracts for IDW close on 15-May, and most abstracts for eRA2025 close on 30-May.  Get those creative writing juices flowing!

We look forward to two resoundingly successful conferences in Brisbane in October!

Alex Reid, Newsletter Editor.

Recap of the 2025 HASS and Indigenous Research Data Commons Summer School
ARDC hosted 2 key events for the HASS and Indigenous Research Data Commons in February 2025 for researchers and custodians of Indigenous data.

“Serendipitous connections.” “Lots of learnings.” “Well-planned.” “A rare combination of the thought-provoking and the practical.”

These are some reflections of participants at the HASS and Indigenous Research Data Commons Summer School and Indigenous Data Masterclass, held in Meanjin/Brisbane on Yagera and Turrbal Country from 3 to 6 February 2025.

Find resources, watch recordings and see photos of the events in our recap at:  https://ardc.edu.au/article/recap-of-the-2025-hass-and-indigenous-research-data-commons-summer-school/.
National Node of ARDC Nectar Research Cloud Goes Live at AARNet
The ARDC and AARNet are excited to announce that the new national node of the ARDC Nectar Research Cloud is now operational, hosted by AARNet at its secure advanced data centre in Sydney.

The new national node provides additional capacity and resilience for important services like the ARDC Virtual Desktop Service, JupyterHub Service, and BinderHub Service, which are seeing a rapid increase in usage.  It also supports various national research platforms and projects, particularly those handling sensitive data, and provides additional capacity and support for researchers with no local node of Nectar.

Phage Therapy: Packing a Punch Against Antibiotic-Resistant Infections
In response to the growing threat of antibiotic-resistant infections, a team of microbial experts has created Sphae, a free online genomic toolkit to rapidly evaluate phage therapy. Three national digital research infrastructure facilities supported Sphae’s development.

Bacteriophages, commonly known as phages, infect and kill bacteria.  They are found wherever bacteria live, including inside humans, animals, the ocean, and soil.

After decades of research, phages are seen as the next frontier in finding fast and effective ways to curb the death toll and serious illnesses caused by antibiotic-resistant ‘superbugs’ every year.

RAiD Expansion to US Strengthens Global Research Transparency and Tracking
The San Diego Supercomputer Center has received a National Science Foundation grant to set up an inaugural Research Activity Identifier (RAiD) Registration Agency for the US in partnership with Lyrasis and with ARDC support, making the RAiD available to the US research community.

Governed by an ISO standard, with the ARDC as the ISO-appointed global Registration Authority, RAiDs are PIDs for research projects.  They work by bringing existing PIDs for the various elements of a research project – eg ORCIDs for researchers, DOIs for data and publications, and RORs for institutions – into a single container.
