Dear Alex, here is the Australasian eResearch Newsletter.
Australasian eResearch Newsletter - April 2024
Message from AeRO:

We are sad to announce that the AeRO Executive Officer, Loretta Davis, has resigned her position with effect from 7-Mar-24.  Loretta has been with AeRO since the beginning (I think), serving in that role part-time for 10 years.  She has been effectively the “face” of AeRO for much of that time, and has contributed hugely to the current success of AeRO.  We wish her well in whatever the future may hold.

Meanwhile, the annual eResearch-Australasia Conference is powering ahead, and is now calling for Abstract Submissions.  The Conference this year will return to Melbourne, at the Pullman Albert Park, and run from 28-Oct-24 to 1-Nov-24.  See https://conference.eresearch.edu.au/.

Alex Reid, Editor.

NCI 2024 User Survey:  closes 19-Apr
NCI is conducting an annual user survey to gather feedback on how to improve their systems and services.  The survey covers topics like which NCI services users utilise, how they use them, and suggestions for enhancements.

Open until April 19, 2024, this 10-15 minute survey aims to guide NCI's future computational and data science support.

Access to the survey via this link:  https://anu.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_40HDahdzAOyV22W.
TechTalk26:  Extracting Metadata from Diverse Data Sources:  24-Apr
This talk will outline software architecture and techniques that alleviate the burden of metadata collation and curation.  It is designed to homogenise metadata harvested from a variety of common metadata catalogue applications.  For metadata-poor sources, textual analysis and machine learning models are utilised.  The limitations and viability of such techniques are discussed.  At the end of the transformation process, ISO-compliant metadata records are created which are suitable for importing into a geonetwork geospatial catalogue.

Online at 2pm AEDT, 24-Apr-24
Speaker:  Vincent Fazio, software developer at CSIRO Mineral Resources.

ARDC Digital Research Skills Summit 2024:  21-May
As the research landscape undergoes rapid digital transformation, upskilling researchers for digital research becomes an imperative for achieving cutting edge discoveries.

Explore digital research skills challenges and opportunities with thought leaders on the first day at the Skills Leadership Forum.  On Day 2, hear from researchers and learn how they navigate their skills needs and gaps.  Then participate in regional conversations with digital research skills trainer communities at Carpentry Connect on Day 3.

Join us for all 3 days (21-23 May) in Melbourne/Naarm, or register for the days which interest you the most.

RedBox Releases Version 3.5
The QCIF Enterprise Solutions team has released Version 3.5 of ReDBox (see https://www.qcif.edu.au/services/redbox/).  It introduces exciting enhancements, including the much-anticipated “Soft Delete” feature.  This allows for the deletion of records with the safety net of being able to recover them if deleted mistakenly.  Initially, this recovery function is exclusively accessible via the REST API, with plans to integrate a user interface in upcoming versions.

Alongside this, the update brings several package upgrades to ensure ReDBox remains robust and up-to-date.

Full release notes can be found on the project’s Github page at:  https://github.com/redbox-mint/redbox-portal/releases/tag/v3.5.
Enabling Soil Data: Research and Resource Project
The Managing and Enabling Soil Data (ESD) project, an initiative between Federation University’s Centre for eResearch and Digital Innovation and the Cooperative Research Centre for High Performance Soils (Soil CRC), aims to develop a fit-for-purpose approach to better manage data for future Soil CRC projects.

This two-year project is responding to the rapid advances in technology that are leading to exponential growth in available soils data and the challenges this represents  These include documenting soil data, and ensuring its interoperability and availability as an enduring asset.
